Simulation-based layout optimization for multi-station assembly lines

Abstract This article presents a novel approach for the automated 3D-layout planning of multi-station assembly lines. The method is based on comprehensive model used production resources, including their geometry, kinematic properties, and general characteristics. Different resource types can be included in system. A genetic algorithm generates optimizes possible layouts line. optimization aims to minimize line’s area costs assembling line while simultaneously optimizing resources’ positioning perform tasks. cycle time considered as boundary condition. For evaluation different layout alternatives, multi-body simulation performed. parameter study set algorithm’s parameters. Afterward, applied three increasingly complex examples validate evaluate its functionality. promising industrial applications it allows integration various individualization function.
